Politicians’ Parade on Queen’s Day

By the time I publish this post, the Dutch is in the middle of celebrating the most anticipated day nationwide: Queen’s Day (koninginnedag) on April 30.

April 30 is the birth of Queen Juliana, the Mother of Queen Beatrix. She maintained her mother’s birthday as the official date of Queen’s day until she abdicates her throne to the eldest son, Willem-Alexander on April 30, 2013. Yep, it means today. It also signifies the last day of Koninginnedag. Starting from 2014, the celebration will be called Koningsdag (King’s Day), followed by the change of its official date into 27 April based on the new king’s birthday. Collecting free postcards was one of my hobbies during my study life in The Netherlands until year 2009 besides mingling with other oranjegekte, as mentioned in my previous post. When I left the country for good, I managed to bring over 300 pieces back home by a cargo aircraft.

The following are some of the last Queen’s Day special edition postcards, printed by Boomerang, when Queen Beatrix was still in reign. With a little help from Photoshop and tons of imagination, only sky is the limit for the creators. Sending invitations to world leaders to attend the festive event is simply unnecessary to make it happen.

Obama & Putin

Yeah, right. Obama and Putin become oranjegekte…

Sarkozy and who? Belusconi?

…so do Sarkozy and ehm…who’s the other politician next to him? Belusconi? Sorry I’m not good at politics.

Queen Beatrix craving for beer

Punch the black hole, with the inscription “BIER HIER” (beer here), in Queen Beatrix’s mouth, with your fingers to create the actual hole. Beer is inseparable from the best party in the world. The Queen is no exception.

The Matrix poster parody

Compare the original poster of The Matrix with its parody version. Willem-Alexander replaces Neo (Keanu Reeves), Maxima replaces Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Beatrix replaces Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). Even the title is changed into Beatrix. Should it be re-titled Wim-Lex or Wim-Trix next year?

the original Matrix movie poster in 1999

Lang leve de koningin! Long live the queen! Starting next year, don’t forget to say Lang leve de koning! Long live the king!
